Social Media Overload?

Posted by: Pam Power on 10/1/2009

As I sit in my basement office, being kept company by my dog Kaiser, I not only am trying to stay warm but hard at work on my Social Media 101 presentation.  Tomorrow is the day I introduce the concept of conversational marketing and what social media means for business to our entire company.  In the last few weeks while I have prepped for this I have read more ebooks, books, articles, blog posts, forums and discussions than I did when I was in school.  I feel prepared and overwhelmed all at the same time.

I have learned a lot of lessons, found some amazing sites and become very appreciative for all the free expert information available now.  The biggest lesson learned, there is an overload of information, sites, technologies and communication methods.  One could easily spend their entire day, week and time reading the vast amounts of information, participating in online conversations and developing relationships.  It is a blessing and a curse.

One of my favorite sites that use as a default and visit over and over again is LinkedIn.  The amount of people, the quality of information, the news and discussions provides me answers as well as links to find more in-depth information.  I also appreciate being able to keep up with my contacts in one location, see what they are up to, moved to and consistenly maintain relationships.

Have you checked out LinkedIn and really investigated how to fully integrate its abilities into your networking and business strategies?

    • I agree Pam. I have found the LinkedIn groups to be very helpful. For instance, I was asked recently for ideas on how to prevent participants attending a for fee training event virtually/remotely from projecting the material and allowing an entire group to attend on one paid seat? Although I had a couple of ideas from my own experience, I posted the question out on one of my groups, "eLearning Guild" and within an couple of hours had over 12 responses from 'colleagues' all over the world. That type of immediacy and connection is powerful!
